IMPACT
There is at least one television in every household across the United States. The average time spent watching television would be five hours (to look at television statistics, click the following link: http://www.statisticbrain.com/television-watching-statistics/). It acts as a powerful force in American culture and affects us in numerous ways. Although we use television to pass time and ease boredom, there are also drawbacks to watching television.
WHAT ARE SOME INFLUENCES OF TV?
POSITIVENot only is television entertaining, it is also informative and educational. We are able to keep up to date with the latest fashion and stock market but most importantly we are able to get live news coverage and information on natural disasters headed our way. It also provides us knowledge of the world outside.
Television also gives people something to talk about. Due to certain television programs and speculations about it, people find something in common with one another. Most of the time family and friends are brought together. They gather around to watch the Super Bowl or simply to have a movie night. Television unites the people of America. |
NEGATIVEOn the other hand, there are plenty of non educational television programs. A lot of these programs contain violence and it makes sense that people are rendered insensible because they see so much of it. It makes it easier for children to engage in violent activities. Due to so much time spent watching television, children will have less time to interact with others and in result will lack the social skills they need. Too much television can also lead to obesity. Watching television does not keep you active and it is safe to say that the term 'couch potato' originated from this.
Television will also manipulate adults. Its tells them what to wear, eat, drink, and even say. Television can change the way people think and the way they treat others and maybe not for the good. The morals across the nation are changing just because 'everyone is doing it'. |
